Digital skills illiteracy in Kenya schools remains a major challenge, particularly in rural areas. Despite government efforts through initiatives such as the Digital Literacy Program, many schools still lack the infrastructure, learning resources, and trained teachers needed to deliver digital education effectively. As a result, many learners are being left behind in an increasingly digital world.  

The impact of this gap is far-reaching. Limited digital literacy affects students’ academic performance in an education system that increasingly depends on technology for teaching and learning. It also reduces their future employment opportunities in a job market where digital skills are becoming essential. In rural communities, this continues to deepen social and economic inequalities, as learners are unable to access the same opportunities available to their urban counterparts.

Addressing this challenge is critical to promoting equitable education and long-term economic development. Without urgent investment in digital infrastructure, teacher training, and equal access to technology, the digital divide between urban and rural communities will continue to widen.
